European Solidarity Centre Gdansk
The European Solidarity Centre in Gdansk is a museum and a library, honouring the history of the trade union Solidarity. The design of the centre also refers to the cradle of Solidarity; the shipyard in Gdansk.
The centre is used for educational and cultural events, and exhibitions. Here, Sunshield and business partner Roltis have realized a beautiful trapezium, and two exceptional skylights.
The trapezium measures about 3,5 by 16 meters, a surface of 56 m2. The two skylights have a width of almost 3 meters, and drops of 21 respectively 25 meters (approx. 60 and 67 m2).
The louver of choice is the 88-E, a blade made from extruded aluminium. Due to its shape, the louvers not only overlap, but also interlock system. In combination with brushes a close to 100% black-out can be realized.
The European Solidarity Centre is both functionally as architecturally very satisfied with the Sunshield 88-E blackout system, since the centre had a strong need for glare control.
The aluminium components are coated in RAL 7012, basalt grey. The injection moulded nylon parts are black.
